2010 Fish Reports
Its been exceptional weather here for most of October till this past week. We
got bombarded with major winds and high seas. Trees were down power was lost
etc. Be very careful venturing out on the waters or anywhere in that case.
There may be unsafe hidden problems. Despite the high winds anglers fishing
from the break wall in Rogers City have been doing very well for browns. Expect
a very good November or until it freezes over.
Rogers City
Browns browns and more browns. The browns were planted this past week on
Thursday. Please try to keep a sportsmanship and release those newly planted
browns for the future. There are plenty of other browns to be taken. Anglers
have been catching 3-6 browns from the wall on a daily basis. They are casting
using smaller spoons like cleos and krocodiles along with cobras. They are also
using body baits that look like smelt or shiners. I would expect it to be very
good here off the wall till Dec. I know I plan on fishing it hard to finally
cash in on some browns trout fishing.
I am now completed with creel until next season and will return right around
April 1. Until then tight lines and good luck fishing with the fall fishing and
up coming and already in progress hunting seasons.
10-18-10
Its been a very nice week for fishing. Mother Nature just cant seem to give up
her nice weather. Its been exceptionally nice for the month of October up here.
Rogers City and Presque Isle have seen very little action form boat anglers.
The ones going out are finding some baitfish out deep over waters 70ft and up.
A few fish have been taken a couple of chinooks and once in a while a steelie.
Lakers are being taken but have to go back because the season is now closed.
Its gotten to be that time of year where fishing isnt a real focus. Its now
hunting that has become top dog.
The real good news is that browns are being taken on a regular basis off the
break wall in Rogers City. They are getting them on body baits that resemble
small shiners and smelt. They are also getting them on small cleos and spoons.
Colors seem to be fire tiger, blue and silver, or chartruse and silver. Use
things that resemble smelt and shiners. Spawn fished below a bobber has also
been good.
The salmon run is pretty much over. The last harvest occurred here Wednesday.
Some very nice fish were harvested.
Everything is pretty much closed for the season restrooms and marina. The
boats have been pulled and put to bed until next season. The docks still remain
in at both ports but before long they will be removed.
Good luck to all of those who fish this week. The browns are around and maybe
even a chinook or two.
10-10-10
Not much for fishing this week although its been a gorgeous week. They
harvested any remaining adult salmon from the weir Thursday. It was a rather
small run with lots of mature jacks. the 3 year old salmon that were there were
very nice size jusgt not very many.
Rogers City
Over the last couple of weeks lots browns have been showing up in the marina.
Anglers are finally getting to know about it but in the wrong way. There have
been a few snagging incidents over the weekend. ANGLERS ARE TO BE REMINDED
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SNAGGING FOR ANY SPECIES WHAT SO EVER. The browns are
not hitting very well right now due to spawning but once they are done the
should readily hit small spoons and body baits like rattle traps bombers and
rapalas. A few adult salmon are present as well. They are starting to get old
and black looking. Most local streams and rivers have seen a few salmon but for
the most part the run is about over. A few hardy boat anglers are going out.
Most of them are getting lots of larger lakers. They have to be thrown back
because the season is closed for them. A couple of smaller silver salmon were
taken around 100ft of water and in the top 45 ft. Green and silver, blue and
silver, or silver. Use the smaller spoons.
Presque Isle
The marina was full of shiners over the weekend but no larger predator fish
there. A few salmon should be in the marina by now but it looks grim for that
this season. A few boats have gone out but nothing to show for their efforts
other than a couple of lakers which are now out of season and have to be
returned immediately to the water. They say they are marking lots of bait balls
so lets hope it will hold up over winter for next years season.
10-3-10
Well its that time of year where most anglers switch gears into hunting rather
than fishing. Angling activity this week has certainly shown that well maybe.
The weather has been absolutely horrible lots of wind making for tough
conditions to fish and get out on the big lake. It looks like this week may be
the last opportunity, indian summer. There are some excellent opportunities to
catch young salmon at both ports right now along with some steelies.
Rogers City
The adult salmon run is very small one this year. The adults coming in are
about done. Whats here is here doesnt look good. Anglers getting out are not
having much luck in getting any adult fish now unless they move right up tight
in the bay and cast. Reminder that you can not fish the river at all. Closed
due to the weir in operation.
On the positive side of things anglers are going north and picking up some nice
silver salmon along with an occasional steelhead. Fish waters no deeper than
70ft and fish the top half of the water column. Look for baitfish on the graph
and find the structure. Spoons will work the best along with the smaller sized
ones. Greens, blues, silver, and oranges will work the best.
Anglers have been fishing from the marina breakwall but with little success
although there should be some browns around. Use things that look like small
smelt and baitfish.
Presque Isle
Anglers are catching some really nice silver salmon. I have had 3 different
anglers come and talk with me saying they have done real well this past week.
Pretty much fishing between the 2 light houses north of the harbor. The best
depths have been 45-60ft of water and fishing the top half of the water column.
Good colors have been greens, blues, silvers and orange. Leadcores 3 or 5
colors have also been good.
Anglers casting in the marina off the docks are not catching anything or seeing
anything.
9-23-10
Wind and rain has pretty much
been the story for the last
week. This next week looks
fairly descent to try and get
out on the lake and it may be
one of the last chances as
well. Lake trout season closes
by midnight of Sept 30th
for this entire area. It will
reopen May 1 2011. Swan Bay
fishing hasn’t lived up to its
potential and fish just are not
there in any type of numbers.
If an opportunity to fish arises
over the next couple of weeks
expect some good fishing for
young salmon and trout at both
ports Rogers City north of town
and pretty much any where at
Presque Isle.
Rogers City
Slow for going after the adult
salmon. Most are trolling very
shallow in Swan Bay or anchoring
and casting both ways its been
on the slow side. Anglers
trolling have been using bombers
off planer boards while casters
are using both cleos and
krocodiles along with some body
baits as well.
Lots of bait has been around and
there should be other species to
target like lakers, steelhead,
browns, and immature kings.
Look for the bait and focus on
structure. Fish north for best
results and fish the top half of
the water column. Use smaller
spoons that resemble smelt or
body baits. The best depths
seem to be 40-70ft. Good colors
are greens, blue and silver,
green and silver, orange, yellow
and green combination and glow
stuff early and late.
Casting from the wall has
yielded a few browns but really
no salmon to report in the
harbor yet.
Presque Isle
Weather remains an issue. If
anglers can get out they are
getting a few steelhead,
walleye, immature kings, and lakers.
Straight out from the harbor or
south towards Stoneport or north
between the 2 light houses have
been places to fish. Bell Bay
has had some adult salmon in
there as well. Fishing water
depths no deeper than 80ft and
fishing the top half of the
water column. Focus on
structure and finding food, the
fish wont be far behind as they
are preparing for the cold
months ahUse smaller spoons that
resemble smelt or body baits.
The best depths seem to be
40-70ft. Good colors are
greens, blue and silver, green
and silver, orange, yellow and
green combination and glow stuff
early and late. No salmon have
been reported or taken in the
harbor yet.
Remember Thursday Sept 30 is the
last day to legally catch and
keep lake trout for this area
til next spring May 1, 2011.
Some good opportunities for
immature kings to be caught are
happening right now with weather
permitting and also lakers,
steelies, with an occasional
walleye or brown can even be
caught. Focus on finding the
baitfish near shore, find
structure, and stay on the fish
once they are located
9-5-10
Fishing has been excellent for anglers will to change their fishing ways.
Angling in this area is much different than it ever use to be. Fish waters
45-80ft deep, dont go looking for temp, and look for the baitfish which tend to
be in the shallower waters. Structure is another key as well. The fish have
been where the bait is and most of the time its been in close to shore 50-65ft
of water. Fishing higher in the water column has also been important as well as
adding stealth to the spread such as lead core lines and small lengths of
copper. Get the baits out and away from the boat.
Rogers City
Fishing has been good paying attention to the details above. Anglers are pretty
much getting fish south towards swan bay, straight out from the harbor, and
north towards 40 mi pt. A super mixed bag of chinooks, lakers, steelies, pinks,
along with the occasional brown and walleye have all been taken. The best
depths have been inside 80ft of water and fishing the top half of the water
column. Using downriggers, lead core of 3,5,7 colors off boards and dipseys set
on a #3 and let out around 135ft. Good colors have been oranges, blue and
silver, wonderbread, yellow, yellow and green, hot pink and white, green orange
and silver spoon, black and white and stuff the glow early and late. Smaller
spoons seem to be working better as well because of smaller prey items.
Presque Isle
Same of type of fishing patter as Rogers City. Fish shallow fish high in the
water column dont go looking for water temp, go looking for bait which has been
in that 45-70ft of water. Fish structure and use stealthy techniques for best
results. Good places to fish have been towards Stone port, straight out of the
harbor from the red can and north between the 2 light houses and north of north
bay. A real mix bag of species has been taken chinooks, lakers, steelies,
pinks, along with the occasional brown and walleye have all been taken. Good
colors have been oranges, blue and silver, wonderbread, yellow, yellow and
green, hot pink and white, green orange and silver spoon, black and white and
stuff the glow early and late. Smaller spoons seem to be working better as well
because of smaller prey items.
The key is to focus on in shallower water where ever you fish. Also look for
the baitfish which has been very abundant in the 45-65ft of water. Fish with
stealthy techniques and fish the top half of the water column. Another thing is
to fish with smaller baits the food available is 3-4in or young of the year prey
which is less than 2in. Walleye spoons have done well on leadcores.
8-29-10
Fishing this week has been hit or miss. Some anglers are doing farely well
while others are struggling. The fish just have not staged around swan bay
hardly at all. There are a few there but the boats have been pounding that area
rather had with not much success. The salmon are still in their late summer
feeding patterns, not much for signs of them staging yet. The males and females
eggs and sperm just have not developed to where they are getting ready to spawn
yet. They are rather small for this time of season. Another week to two weeks
would be my bet for fish in that area. Try fishing the deeper waters of
60-120ft. It seems as thought once the anglers can find the fish they tend to
be staying the same area for best results. The other keys are to find and fish
the structure along with the baitfish which have been in shallow water not
necessarily around swan bay.
Rogers City
Fishing has kicked into high gear fishing Swan bay but not much for results, the
salmon are still in there summer feeding patterns as of right now. Anglers I
hear are marking the fish and bait but nothing seems to want to hit. Try
fishing adams pt or straight out from the harbor as well. Good depths to fish
have been anywhere from 40-120ft of water. Every day seems to be a little
different. Key in on structure along with baitfish and shallow water those seem
to be important for success. Anglers are using stealth tactics like leadcore
and copper. 5 and 7 color leadcores seem to be the best while downriggers are
fished about half way down the water column for best results. Good colors have
been green and silver, blue and silver, orange and white, yellows, black and
white, oranges, greens, and purples. Glows early and late have also been
producing. Not much as far as jplug action yet. A few flashers with attractors
are just starting to pick up a few fish. Good colors have been white on white
or silver and white. Still a great mixed bag fishery taking place with kings,
lakers, steelies, pinks, browns and a few walleyes thrown into the mix as well.
Presque Isle
Anglers are catching mainly Chinooks, lakers, pinks, steelies along with some
walleyes. The best depths have been close to shore and structure. Baitfish has
also been loaded up in the shallows. Good depths to fish have been anywhere from
40-120ft of water. Every day seems to be a little different. Key in on
structure along with baitfish and shallow water those seem to be important for
success. Anglers are using stealth tactics like leadcore and copper. 5 and 7
color leadcores seem to be the best while downriggers are fished about half way
down the water column for best results. Good colors have been green and silver,
blue and silver, orange and white, yellows, black and white, oranges, greens,
and purples. Glows early and late have also been producing. Not much as far as
jplug action yet. A few flashers with attractors are just starting to pick up a
few fish. Good colors have been white on white or silver and white. Still a
great mixed bag fishery taking place with kings, lakers, steelies, pinks, browns
and a few walleyes thrown into the mix as well. Good places to try have been
straight out from the red can or north between the 2 lights. Stone port has
also seen some pressure along with false Presque isle, there are fishing nets
out that way so be careful.
8-22-10
Fishing this week has been really good for some while for others its been a
struggle. Bigger salmon are beginning to show up frequently in the creel. Lots
of smaller immature salmon are also still being taken. What has really been
awesome is that the Steelies are still being taken in rather large numbers.
They seem to be everywhere and are willing to bite pretty much any time of the
day. A great multi-species fishery still is going on. Anything from kings,
Lakers, Steelies, Coho, pinks, browns, and walleyes can be taken.
Rogers City
The best fishing seems to be south towards Swan Bay or straight out from the
harbor. A few have been going north not much to report. Good depths of water
have been anywhere from 45-9oft depending upon where the bait and cooler water
is. Many fish have been taken in 45-60ft where most of the bait seems to be.
Fish 3,5, or 7 colors of leadcore off boards has been very good for both kings
and Steelies. They have been fishing downriggers about halfway down in the
water column. Good colors have been blue and silver, green and yellow, green,
black and white, white, blue dolphins, green dolphins, and stuff the glow for
early and late fishing. This next week should be a good week to give fishing a
try during the daylight hours as the full moon is Tuesday. Anglers have done
well during daylight hours during the full moon period.
Presque Isle
Not much for creel this past week. Every time I have been there the wind has
been blowing and rough for anglers to try and fish. Fish 45-80ft of water and
find the structure points. Fish about half way down in the water column.
Straight out from the red can, north towards the 2 light houses or south towards
Stoneport and false Presque Isle should be good bets. Good colors have been
blue and silver, green and yellow, green, black and white, white, blue dolphins,
green dolphins, and stuff the glow for early and late fishing. This next week
should be a good week to give fishing a try during the daylight hours as the
full moon is Tuesday.
Since this is the week for the full moon anglers should give mid day fishing a
try or try fishing the moon light hours in the evening. The fish have been out
of temperature all summer and that hasn't changed yet. The bait has been stacked
in the 35-60ft of water lately. Find the bait and work around it. Also find
structure where it drops off rapidly into deep water. Its been a good spot for
fish hiding out recently. Fish with smaller spoons not magnum in size. the
walleye size spoons have also been good this week. Lots of young of the year
smelt around and lots in the stomachs so smaller and baits that look like smelt
will be the ticket.

We were fortunate enough to be the winning boat of the HBAAA tournament.
Here is what we did:
Day 8-14
We set up in 40 fow at calcite and trolled south to Adams point. We worked between
25 and 40 fow with 50, 75 and 100' copper lines on boards. We were running glow
Silver Horde plugs and Michigan Stinger Nitro spoons. We only took one fish early
on the plug, the rest of our early bite was on the wonderbread, twister and blue
killer nitros. We stayed inside of 40 fow all day, and changed our baits out to all
spoons by 8:00. Our hot spoons once it got light enough to see were the Stinger
Blue Wiggle, Blue Killer, Double Orange Crush and the Red Hot.
We finished Day one 17 for 22, with 6 Kings, 5 Lake Trout, 5 Steelhead and 1 Brown.
Day 8-15
We set up straight out of the Harbor in 25 FOW and headed south towards Adams point
again. Unfortunately, our Kings had moved on us,and we spent most of the day on the hunt.
We worked 25 to 75 fow, and we were able to put together a solid box of steelhead to keep
us in the game. We finished 13 for 17 with 4 kings, 4 steelhead, 3 lake trout, 1 brown
trout and 1 atlantic. Our hot baits were Stinger's Lemon Ice, Yellow Tuxedo and Red Hot.
At the weigh in we learned that a couple boats found big kings down on 40 mile point in
30 - 55 fow. This was the first time we fished Rogers city. We had a lot of action and
a lot of good fish too. I have never been able to put the variety and sizes together in
one trip like we were able to in Rogers City! We met some tremendous fisherman in the area
- Wet Box, Sandman, Direct Deposit - All great fisherman and good guys too!
a big thanks to the HBAAA for a great tournament. I'm looking forward to fishing it
again next year!

Fishing this week has been hit or miss but anything from salmon steelies,
Lakers, walleye, pinks Coho can be caught. The big question right now is where
have all of the adult kings taken off to? They were here but seem to have
vanished or something. Some cold water finally moved in a again so maybe that
will help.
Rogers City
Great mixed bag but has slowed some what over the last week or so. Best depths
have been anywhere from 45-90ft of water and fishing the top half of the water
column. Using down riggers along with leadcore and dipsey divers to get the
lures out and away from the boat has been the best. Good colors have been blue
and silver, green, orange and silver, orange and black, yellowtail, black and
white monkey puke and wonder bread.
Presque Isle
Best places to fish have been straight out from the red can and north between
the 2 light houses. South towards stone port some commercial trap nets have been
set so be careful when fishing that area. The best depths have been 45-120ft of
water and fishing the top half of the water column. Using down riggers along
with leadcore and dipsey divers to get the lures out and away from the boat has
been the best. Good colors have been blue and silver, green, orange and silver,
orange and black, yellowtail, black and white monkey puke and wonderbread. A
mixed bag can still be taken some kings, steelies, a few walleyes, and some
pinks. A lot of lakers and small sub legal have been taken, 22in is the min
anglers can keep.
The keys for this past week has been to zero in on the baitfish and to fish the
structure.
7-25
Fishing has been great starting to see a few limits of salmon and trout
combinations. The other good news is some bigger salmon are starting to show
up and its that time of year when they should. I have seen a good handful of
salmon that weigh in the mid teens or higher just this week a lone. A very good
mixed bag of steelies, Lakers, Coho, pinks, browns and even a few walleyes
coming in at both ports. Once again anglers are marking a lot of bait fish in
shallow water and they seem to be smelt as the fish are full of them.
Rogers City
Good places to fish have been straight out, north towards 40 mile pt and south
towards Adams pt and swan bay. No real one spot has been better than the other.
There seems to be a lot of fish around right now. Best depths have been from
45-120ft of water depending upon what time of day it is and if the sun is very
bright or not. The cloudier days have been better fishing all the way around.
this week it should be better very late at night or during the mid day because
of the full moon. It would be an excellent time to get out and try some
moonlight fishing at night. Anglers have been using lead cores of 3-7 colors
dipsies and slide divers set on a number 3 and let out at least 130ft. The
important thing has been to get the lines and lures out and away from the boat.
Fish have been spooking very easily especially in the shallow water because of
the very clear clarity. They have been fishing the lead cores off planer boards
for better results. The other thing is the fish have really been out of
temperature so finding temp has not been important. The key is to find baitfish
and stick around them, sooner or later the fish have to eat. Good colors have
been the blue or green dolphins, monkey puke, wonder bread, orange crush, orange
cream sickle, black and white glow, and green. A silver dodger with a white
squid has also been good this past week.
Presque Isle
Straight out and between the 2 light houses have been the best. Fish the
structure has been very important. Stone port has also been seeing some angling
action. They are getting a mixed bag of Chinooks, Lakers, pinks, steelies, a
few walleyes and a few browns. Good colors have been the green dolphin, blue
dolphin, orange and silver, wonder bread, green and purple and black and white.
The real encouraging thing has been the anglers are having to sort through a lot
of smaller one year old kings. This is very good news for next year if the fish
continue to get good amounts of food. There seems to be alot of smelt out there
as the fish have been full of them. I have seen lots of smelt in the fish
stomachs so that is good news.
I made it out this past week and have picked up some really nice kings the last
2 trips I have picked up 4 over 12lbs.
Until next week tight lines and go get out and go fishing. Salmon and trout
fishing here has been really good. Two keys fish shallow water like 45-65ft and
find the structure and baitfish, the fish are very focused on the food right
7/18/10
Fishing this week continues to be a really good multi-species fishery.
Everything like Chinooks, Lakers, Steelies, Coho, pinks, walleye and even a few
browns have been taken. We had a blow on Saturday so that may change things but
before that it was very good. The keys are to find structure and crash it also
look for baitfish as well. Those 2 things have been key in catching fish.
Another important thing is to fish high. Most anglers are fishing down riggers
no deeper than 45ft down also lead cores of 3, 5, and 7 colors have also been
good. Dipseys and slide divers have also been working, sliders on the down
riggers have also been good.
Rogers City
Good fishing spots have been Adams pt, straight out from the harbor and towards
40 mile pt. The best depths have been 50-120ft of water and fishing the top
half of the water column. Good colors have been green, blue, blue and silver,
orange and silver, orange and black, blue dolphin, green dolphin, and the
extended glow lures that glow green. There also has been a very good late bite
from about 9pm and on.
Presque Isle
Great multi-species fishery here as well. Good places to fish have been between
the 2 lights and off the big light house point. The best depths have been
anywhere from 60-120ft of water and fishing the top 50ft or so. The green
dolphins and blue dolphins have been hot. The greens and the blues have been
very good. Try oranges up high for Steelies.
Until next week tight lines and good luck fishing.
7-11-10
WHAT A NEAT WEEK TO WET A LINE IN NORTHERN LAKE HURON. ANGLERS ARE CATCHING SO
MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF SALMON AND TROUT SPECIES. BONUS WALLEYES HAVE ALSO BEEN
CAUGHT. THEY ARE CATCHING LAKERS, PINKS, COHO SALMON, STEELHEAD,
CHINOOKS, WALLEYE AND EVEN AN OCCASIONAL BROWN.
ROGERS CITY
BEEN THE BETTER OF THE 2 PORTS FOR HOOKING INTO A CHINOOK SALMON. THEY ARE
GETTING A REAL MIXED BAG OF SALMON AND TROUT INCLUDING SOME BONUS WALLEYE. BEST
HAS BEEN FROM THE MARINA TO FORTY MILE PT AND EVEN PAST IT TOWARDS HAMMOND BAY.
THE BITE HAS BEEN A GOOD EVENING BITE. THE BEST DEPTHS HAVE BEEN FROM 50-120FT
OF WATER AND FISHING ABOUT HALF WAY DOWN IN THE WATER COLUMN. LEADCORES OF
THREE TO SEVEN COLORS HAVE BEEN GOOD ALONG WITH SLIDERS OFF DOWNRIGGERS. GOOD
COLORS HAVE BEEN BLUE AND GREEN DOLPHINS, ORANGES, GREENS, BLUE AND SILVER,
FLINTSTONE LURES BOUNTY HUNTER, GREEN WHALE, CORNBREAD, AND THE X GLOW LURES
EARLY AND LATE. MOONSHINE YELLOWTAIL LATE HAS ALSO BEEN GOOD.
PRESQUE ISLE
A GOOD MIXED BAG OF SALMON AND TROUT.. BEST DEPTHS HAVE BEEN 50--20 AND FISHING
THE TOP HALF OF THE WATER COLUMN. LEADCORES OF THREE TO SEVEN COLORS HAVE BEEN
GOOD ALONG WITH SLIDERS OFF THE DOWNRIGGERS.
THE FISH SEEM TO BE HIGH, A VERY GOOD LATE EVENING BITE, AND FEEDING VERY WELL
ON SMELT. THERE ALSO HAS BEEN A LOT OF ONE YEAR OLD KINGS WHICH WILL PROVIDE
FOR A GREAT FISHERY IN ANOTHER YEAR. UNTIL NEXT WEEK TIGHT LINES GO FISHING AND
HAVE FUN.
7-6-10
We are now in the transitional time between the salmon coming in and the lakers
moving out. Lakers can still be taken but go deeper and find some colder water,
smaller ones can still be caught in close. Now would be an exceptional time to
fish offshore like 150-200ft of water and fish the top 50 or so feet. Look for
scum lines and bugs on the surface fish will be feeding close by.
Rogers City
Kings are showing up but not in any impressive numbers yet but some good size.
Targeting them has yielded some success. Find structure and bait has been key
also fishing very early before sun rise and well after sun set has been the
best. Fish waters 80-120ft deep and fish the top 50ft. Stealth has been very
important as well get lines and lures out and away from the boat. Good colors
to try have been black and white, monkey puke, bloody nose, purple and green,
green with gold ladder back, blue whale, after dark or very early try things
that glow green.
Presque Isle
Many smaller throw back Lakers. A few kings taken off the big lighthouse point.
Just really starting to show up. Try the 80-120ft of water and fish the top 50
or so feet.
Give it a couple of weeks and some salmon should be around weather permitting.
Was out Friday and went a perfect 8-8. 6 kings 1 steelie, 1 coho. Everything was
high with 5 colorleadcore and sliders on the downriggers, darker colors and very
fast almost 3.0 at the ball.
6-26-10
Fishing this past week has been tough. We have had a lot of small miniature
fronts go in and out all week long. Lots of rain along with thunder storms
which have scattered the fish. The best thing is to concentrate on structure
and look for baitfish. A real variety of fish have been taken though, Chinooks,
steelhead, Coho, lake trout, atlantics, and pinks.
Rogers City
Fishing straight out and south or west toward 40 mile pt has been the best
fishing spots. Good depths have been anywhere from 55-120ft of water and
fishing 35-65ft down. Good colors have been green dolphin, blue and silver,
green and silver, monkey puke, and orange and silver. Oranges have been very
good on lead cores of 1-5 colors for steelies.
Presque Isle
Quite a variety of fish have been taken Chinooks, steelies, Coho, pinks, lake
trout along with an occasional pink. They have been fishing 60-120ft of water
and fishing the top 65ft. Good colors have been green dolphin, monkey puke,
orange and silver and blue and silver.
It looks like a very good 4th of July week coming up with some warm summer
weather. Chinooks should be showing up in some numbers with in the next couple
of weeks. Until next week tight lines and good luck fishing.
6-20-10
Angling action continues to pick up along with the catching. This past week has
featured some fantastic steelhead fishing within a mile from shore. A huge bug
hatch has spurred the whole bite. Anglers are picking them up just about
anywhere just look for bugs on the surface and flat seas for best action. A
great mixed bag fishery has also become real with Chinooks, Coho, atlantics,
steelhead, lake trout, pink salmon, along with an occasional walleye and brown
taken. Both ports have been very active with many fish being taken and a real
variety.
Rogers City
Fish are being taken just about anywhere. Focus on structure and look for the
baitfish. Good spots are 40 mile pt, state park, Adams pt and straight out from
the harbor. Another very good spot for steelies has been from 40 mi pt light
house up to Hammond bay. They have been taking a lot of steelies and lakers in
this area. The best depths have been from 40-70ft of water and fishing the top
38 ft or so. Leadcore 1-5 colors have been very good. Try using orange spoons
on lead core, greens have also been good along with the silvers. Downriggers
covering the 25-35ft down have been good. Try using spoons with green, blue,
orange, or with silver on any of these colors as well. The smaller spoons have
been working the best. Try fishing a small flasher and spoon.
Presque Isle
From Stone port to the red can has been the best area to fish. Try depths from
50-80ft and fish the top 45ft or so using downriggers and leadcore. Good colors
have been oranges and silvers up high along with greens, blues, and chartreuse.
I finally got out this week on Friday for a short time before the lake got
rough. Picked up a really nice king 12lbs not bad for the first trip. Seems
weird our first fish is a salmon.
6/13
ITS BEEN A GOOD WEEK OF FISHING WHEN WEATHER BEHAVES AND ANGLERS CAN GET OUT.
AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF A MULTITUDE OF SPECIES CAN BE TAKEN CHINOOKS, LAKE TROUT,
PINKS, COHO, AND ATLANTIC SALMON IN GOOD NUMBERS. THE BEST PLACES TO FIND FISH
IS TO FOCUS ON AREAS OF STRUCTURE FOR BOTH PORTS.
ROGERS CITY
GOOD AREAS TO DROP A LINE ARE 40 MI PT, SEAGULL PT, STATE PARK, AND ADAMS PT.
WATCH OUT FOR COMMERCIAL FISHING NETS FROM THE STATE PARK TO 40MI PT, MOST ARE
DEEPER THAN 55FT OF WATER. GOOD DEPTHS HAVE BEEN 50-80FT OF WATER FISHING THE
TOP 45FT. USE DOWNRIGGERS SET 45-25FT AND FISH 1-5 COLORS OF LEADCORE OFF
PLANER BOARDS. A HUGE BUG HATCH OCCURED SUNDAY AND LOTS OF STEELIES TAKEN ON
LEADCORE WITH ORANGE SPOONS. ORANGES GREENS, BLUES, CHARTRUSES IN COMBINATION
WITH SILVER HAVE ALL BEEN GOOD COLORS.
PRESQUE ISLE
GREAT MULTI SPECIES FISHERY RIGHT NOW. GOOD PLACES TO FISH HAVE BEEN AREAS OF
STRUCTURE STRAIGHT OUT, STONEPORT, FALSE PRESQUE ISLE AND BETWEEN THE TWO
LIGHTS. BEST DEPTHS 50-80FT AND FISHING NO DEEPER THAN 45FT DOWN. PRETTY MUCH
THE SAME COLORS ETC AS ROGERS CITY.
UNTIL NEXT WEEK TIGHT LINES AND GOOD LUCK AND GO FISHING.
6/6/10
Well a soggy weekend for this area but the rain was well needed. This should
help decrease the dangerous fire conditions we have had for the last couple of
months. It should also create some run off which may indeed bring in some
baitfish and fish along the shoreline. We may even get a late spring brown
trout run along the shore line where brown water is. Dont be surprised to see
any of the other species as well. We are heading into a transition time between
the major lake trout fishery and the beginning of the summer salmon mixed bag
fishery. The lakers have begun to spread out more and cover more of the water
column. They are not just close to the bottom anymore especially in Rogers
City. I would expect the lake trout to be getting harder and harder to catch as
they move around more and out to deeper cooler water.
Rogers City
Its been an awesome spring lake trout fishery here but its starting to wind down
towards the tail end. Now they will be taken in deeper water and more through
out the water column as they hunt for food. Try fishing waters at least 50ft
and up. Fish the bottom 20ft or so and dont be afraid in fishing them through
out the water column. they are getting many of them like that now. Spoons in a
variety of colors mainly green and silver, blue and silver, chartruse, and
oranges up high on leadcores or high set down riggers. A dodger with spin glow
has also been very good. From about the state park to and up past 40 mile pt
light has been the best for fishing. Most of the anglers have been fishing this
way. A few salmon have been mixed in and many of them have been taken on
dodgers and spin glows fished higher in the water column for lakers. Still a
mixed bag fishery in not knowing what will be caught out there. As we get more
into June things should really heat up for a great mixed bag fishery of
chinooks, lake trout, atlantics, steelies, pinks and coho.
Adams point has been quiet but a few anglers have been getting lakers that way,
again fishing deeper water now like 50-60ft and close to the bottom. Cow bells
with spin glow and dodgers with spin glow or small walleye spoons behind them
have been good.
Presque Isle
Lakers are scattered all over the place in shallow deep where ever. The best
seems to be from 30-70ft of water and fishing the bottom 15ft or so. Once again
cowbells with spin glows or peanuts and dodgers with spin glows or peanuts have
been taking most of the lakers. Atlantics can still be taken, fish the top 8ft
with small bodybaits that look like a rainbow trout or smolt pattern and smelt.
they are also acidently getting a chinook or two and atlantics once in a while
with lake trout lures. A lot of smaller lakers are being taken and lots of
sorting to get legal 22in fish.
The really good news is that anglers have been telling me that they have been
marking lots of bait balls lately at both ports. This is very good news. Once
the salmon figure out they are around fishing should pick up. Plenty of food in
the stomachs mostly smelt and gobies but a few alewives and stickle backs. Most
of the prey items have been on the smaller side so try spoons and body baits on
the smaller side. I am hoping to finally get out fishing after quite a lay up
after some surgery. Hopefully I will have a personal fish report for next week.
Until then tight lines and good luck fishing.
5-30
What a gorgeous week and weekend for fishing. Lots and lots of fishing pressure
along with plenty of fish caught. Lake trout fishing has hit its peak while I
have seen my first few chinook salmon taken along with a 15lb steelhead caught
off the wall in Rogers City and quite a mixed bag fishery fishing from the
boats. Anything is fair game right now. The silver fish are finally becoming
active and starting to show up.
Rogers City
Fish are being caught just about all over the place from south of the harbor to
north of the harbor towards 40 mi pt. Best depths have been from 40-90ft of
water and fishing structure. The top half of the water column is where most of
the silver fish are being taken while the lakers are coming in the bottom 10ft.
The lakers are being caught on cowbells with spin glows and dodgers with spin
glows along with spoons that are green and silver, gold and yellow and
chartruse. The silver fish have been taken on a variety of colors greens,
blues, purples have been the best with silver on them. Smelt like patterns or
things that look like gobies and smelt along with small spoons and body baits
would be the best to try.
Presque Isle
Very good for atlantics and plenty of lakers as well. The atlantics are being
taken very high on boards and lures run the top 15ft of the water column. Try
body baits that look like a smolting fish or rainbow trout. Bright colors like
orange red and yellow lures have also been working. The lakers are being taken
on cowbells with spin glows and dodgers with spin glows. The best depths seem
to be 45-70ft of water and fishing just off the bottom. The atlantics are
coming 50-70ft of water either between the 2 light houses or south between
stoneport and false Presque Isle.
As long as the weather stays like this fishing will only continue to improve
along with the silver fish. Until next week tight lines and good luck fishing.
5-23
Weather, winds sunshine, fishing its all been a very positive week. A beautiful
week. Fishing was great. Lots of lake trout and a few atlantics, steelhead,
browns and chinooks mixed in with the catch this past week. Fish were moving a
lot so every day fishing was a little different meaning they had either moved to
a little deeper water or moved in a little be bit depending upon the water temp
and if the seas were dead flat. Mornings have also been a little better than
afternoon and evening fishing.
Rogers City
Lakers and more lakers. Good fishing pretty much south, north and straight out.
Good depths have been anywhere from 15-60ft of water and has been varying daily.
The calm water fish have been deeper. The best depths have been 40-60ft for the
most part. Cowbells with spin glows or dodgers with spin glows have been good.
Spoons with orange and gold, blue and silver, chartruse, green and blue, orange
and copper, and green have been all good colors to try for the atlantics,
browns, steelhead and kings. Body baits resembling smelt and gobies have also
been good. The fish are eating very well, I have been seeing smelt, a few
alewives, sticklebacks and lots of gobies even in the atlantic salmon and
especially the lake trout.
Presque Isle
Very good lake trout fishing. Good depths have been from 45-80ft of water
fishing just off the bottom like 5-8 ft. Dodgers and spin glows or cowbells
with spin glows have been the ticket. Atlantics are still being taking as well,
fish the 40-60ft of water and fish the top 25-30ft with bright colors orange and
green has been very good. Bodybaits resembling smelt and gobies would be a good
bet too. Try fishing between the 2 lighthouses. Lakers are being taken off the
big light house point going on and off of the structure there.
I look for fishing lakers to be good for another week or two and should peek
this week. Until next week tight lines and good luck fishing.
5-16-10
Its been a beautiful weekend for fishing. Not on the job but things have really
taken off especially for lake trout. Over the next week or so I look for some
excellent lake trout fishing from both ports. The best part about it is that
these fish are easy catching right now being in the shallows. Less then 60ft of
water and primarily 30-50ft is best.
Rogers City
Good lake trout fishing most boats are coming in with anywhere from 3-5 fish.
The best depths have been 25-55ft of water and fishing the bottom 5-8ft in the
deeper water and in the shallow stuff anglers are high lining cowbells with a
little weight to get them close to the bottom. Cowbells with spin glows or
dodgers with spin glows have been the ticket. Anglers are also picking up an
occasional steelhead, Atlantic, brown and Chinook salmon. They are fishing
lines higher in the water column with planer boards high lines and 1-3 colors of
leadcore. Spoons and body baits are the mainstay for fishing this way. Good
colors have been blue and silver, pink orange and copper, green and silver, fire
tiger, orange and green.
Presque Isle
Earlier in the week it was hot for atlantics at Presque Isle around Stone port
and down towards Rockport. Anglers were high lining and using 1-3 colors of
leadcore off boards. Once again spoons and body baits were the ticket. Good
colors have been blue and silver, pink orange and copper, green and silver, fire
tiger, orange and green. They seem to love stuff that has bright orange green,
and yellow all on one lure. Lakers are also being taken. They seem to be a
little deeper here right now from about 40-60ft of water and fishing just off
the bottom. Cowbells with spin glows and dodgers with spin glows have been
good. Good places to try have been north of the red can out from the big light
house and the point associated with it.
Until next week tight lines and good luck fishing.
5-11-10
Rogers City
It’s been a tough week of fishing. Old man winter decides to return for one more
blast of cold air and snow. Along with that lots of wind and cold temps.
Before all of that we had some really nice rains. All of the rivers are way up
and lots of brown water entering Lake Huron in this area. With warmer temps
expected this week I expect fishing along the shore line in small boats to
really pick up. The brown water is a real draw to bring fish close to shore.
Its a tad warmer than the main lake water and its a magnet for bait fish etc.
A few anglers have been casting from the break wall here in town along with
fishing around the docks. I have seen nothing caught. They have been casting
either spoons or body baits. Bright colors are much better in the very stained
water. Try chartreuse and silver, fire tiger, orange and gold, black and gold,
and silver, or things that resemble smelt.
A few anglers are trolling and I weighed a nice 8lb Atlantic salmon taking
Saturday. The fish was chuck full of stickle backs and smelt. They were small
so small body baits and spoons should work the best. They are fishing
relatively close to shore no deeper than 25ft of water. They are using planer
boards and running body baits at least 100ft off the board. The best is to
follow the brown water close to the shorelines right now. West of the harbor
towards seagull point or south towards swan bay and in calcite harbor are good
places to try.
All of the boat docks are in at Rogers City, the cleaning station and marina
does not open til May right now.
Some steelies have been taken in the Ocqueoc River drifting spawn or flies.
Should be more entering the river this week with all of the rain we have
received.
Until next week tight lines and good luck fihsing.
4-28-10
I don’t have anything really new but I
know guys are getting a few fish. It’s
been mostly tough weather lots of wind
and rough seas as of late. Fishing
south from calcite to Adams Pt has been
the best. Body baits run off boards
have been the best in Shallow from about
15-30ft of water. Good colors have been
blue and silver chartreuse and silver
fire tiger, and orange and gold. Not a
whole lot had been happening off the
wall as of late. They are getting a mix
bag of atlantics, browns and steelhead.
Nice sized fish. Many of them have
smelt in their stomachs from last year’s
hatch which is a very good sign for
things to come this summer.
The good news is that lake trout
season opens this weekend beginning on
Saturday. From about trout river to
Detour the size limit has changed for
Lake trout this season. The maximum
size that can be kept is 27inches in
length. There is no minimum. Anglers
can still keep 3 fish per person. From
trout river south to Black River the
size limit is 22in and up. The bag
limit is 3 per angler.
Anglers fishing lake trout will want to
fish shallow water and where rocky
substrate is present, gobies live there
and the Lakers love to eat them. The
depths I would try would be from about
20-50ft of water. The shallower water
try dragging cowbells with a little
weight to get them down in the deeper
water fish just about 5ft off bottom
with cowbells and spin glos.
4-4-10
Fishing is just starting for this area up here. Most anglers are just
uncovering their boats and preparing them for the season. No real reports to
speak of although a few early bird anglers have been out. It’s been very tough
fishing so far. With hardly any river run off which is warmer water that draws
fish close to shore just isn’t around at all. Most of the in close water is very
clear which has the fish very wary. If not much river run off occurs anglers
will be forced to wait for the water to warm up a little more and that should
draw more baitfish in closer as well as the fish.
The few anglers I have talked to the last couple of days have been reporting a
number of follows from smaller browns, they just are not hitting for some
reason. I can attest to this as I have fished a few times some follows from
smaller fish but no takers. A few browns have been taken and so far they have
been smaller between 17-23in so far.
Anglers have been casting a variety of spoons and body baits. Try colors that
resemble smelt, blue and silver, silver, green and silver and fire tiger. Boat
anglers are running planer boards with body baits in blue and silver, fire
tiger, green, and things that resemble smelt. They are running lures way back
from the boat and away from it due to very clear water conditions. Mostly
browns and atlantics have been targeted. Until next week tight lines and good
luck fishing.
